Curriculum
Glenunga International High School offers a broad based curriculum designed to meet the needs of students in the 21st Century. Our students identified Opportunity as a key value of the school. Our curriculum offers students a wide range of subject choices particularly in senior school and pathways through school to further study or employment. The curriculum specialisations also offer many learning opportunities for students to develop their potential.
The curriculum in Year 8 and 9 is structured to ensure that students experience a wide range of subjects so they can make informed decisions about senior school pathways. In Year 10 students are able to select a group of subjects that reflect their pathway leading to either the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) or the International Baccalaureate Senior Diploma in Years 11 and 12. Students can select VET (Vocational Education and Training Courses) as part of their program from Year 10 and these units can contribute to meeting the SACE requirements.
As an international school we seek to develop the school values of international mindedness and excellence through our curriculum. In Years 8 and 9 students undertake the International Thinking Curriculum which focuses on creating global citizens who are able to use higher order thinking skills to problem solve and to think flexibly and creatively. These values continue to develop in our senior school curriculum. Our curriculum is rigorous and challenges students to achieve their personal best.
Specialisations
Glenunga is the only DECS school that currently offers the IB Senior Diploma, which is recognized by universities throughout the world for the preparation it provides to students entering tertiary study. This course also seeks to develop students into global citizens who are equipped to thrive in the 21st Century.
Glenunga has been selected by DECS to work with Flinders and UniSA to research how technology can be used to improve student learning. This has resulted in our classrooms becoming a technology rich environment that enhances student learning.
Glenunga is also one of three DECS schools selected to offer the IGNITE Program for students with high intellectual potential. Established in 1997 this program offers students a range of options to meet their needs such as; vertical acceleration, subject acceleration and enrichment. The school believes in learning readiness rather than education by chronological age. In practice this means that many students in the school, whether in the IGNITE Program or not are able to study subjects above their year level.
Program X
At Glenunga we work to develop the whole student. We understand that learning is most successful when students are taught how to learn and when they are equipped with attributes that support success, such as persistence, thinking about thinking, and working effectively in teams. We also study curriculum that builds caring, principled and open minded people. In Program X we explicitly teach these through the Habits of the Mind, the SACE Capabilities and the IB Learner Profile. We believe that this also supports our school value of Harmony.
Achievement
Glenunga is proud of its record as a high performing school where students regularly score execellent results in Year 12 SACE and IB Diploma, and NAPLAN scores are above state and national standards.
