English & ESL

PHILOSOPHY

Glenunga International High School’s values - EXCELLENCE, OPPORTUNITY, INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS, HARMONY- underpin the construction of the English curriculum.
While Glenunga International High School is a linguistically and culturally diverse community, participation in many aspects of Australian life requires effective communication in English. In addition, proficiency in English is invaluable globally.
Therefore we seek to understand other cultures by providing students with a range of perspectives from diverse cultures in our curriculum. We believe in providing support to students from Non English Speaking Backgrounds with explicit teaching to develop their skills.
The English curriculum develops confident communicators, imaginative and critical thinkers; individuals and teams who can analyse and evaluate complex ideas and communicate their thoughts effectively in a range of ways. Students develop an understanding of the power of language and the way it can be used to influence people.
Opportunities are provided for students to compare their own experiences and values with those presented in literature. In this way, students are able to reflect on insights into what drives human behaviour in worlds beyond their own, leading to a better understanding of themselves and others.
The English curriculum has been designed to challenge students to develop their language skills to the best of their ability. We believe in all students working to their potential and we differentiate the curriculum to support all learners. ICT provides an opportunity for personalizing learning for students.
We seek to cultivate a love of language and literature that will remain with students as they successfully navigate the 21st Century as skilled and confident, adult communicators.
