Annual Report
EXTRACT FROM THE ANNUAL REPORT
Glenunga is a special interest school for students with high intellectual potential (IGNITE) with over 30% of students in Year 8 entering through this program. 70% of Year 8 students were in zone or exercising sibling rights. 7% of the school’s population in 2011 were overseas fee paying students.
Although 2010 was the final year of the Learning Technologies Research Project we have continued working with our partners from Flinders University and the University of South Australia on how technology can enrich face to face teaching. This has complemented our priority of delivering exceptional twenty first century teaching and learning.
In 2011 GIHS received a final Digital Education Revolution allocation of 523 computers and our wireless network was expanded to accommodate 1000 users. Our teachers continued to use the Wednesday morning late start for students to increase their understanding of how learning technologies enhance face to face teaching. In particular they built Moodle sites for every subject at every year level to create virtual learning environments. They also continued to learn how to effectively use interactive white boards and relevant online software packages. All Year 8 and 9 students were involved in the One to One Laptop Learning Program, which in turn changed classroom practices.
Throughout 2011 our students have been very successful in a range of state and national competitions eg taking out the prestigious Oliphant Trophy, DECS Young Scientist Award, DSTO 8 – 10 Award and one of the CSIRO Best Schools Awards at the Oliphant Science awards; in the University of NSW Science Competition we also received one Special Award, 14 High Distinctions and 52 Distinctions. Similarly in the Australian Maths Competition our students received 1 medal, 6 prizes, 14 High Distinctions, 66 Distinctions and 38 Credits. This is important evidence of the success of South Australian public education.
In 2011 the design plans were finalised for our $15.7 million new building and refurbishments. Extensive consultation was undertaken with staff and parent and student forums were held. Permission was given for the project to undertake construction and refurbishment simultaneously. Building is due to start in October 2012.
